    Description

This is an old German regimental beer stein which I believe to be of historical significance.  Based upon  research and information found on the Internet, this stein may also be linked to the WWII Luftwaffe by way of ancestry.
    Pictured on the stein is
Luitpold Karl Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig, Prince Regent of Bavaria
    (born 12 March 1821 – died 12 December 1912), the
    de facto
ruler of Bavaria from 1886 to 1912.
The person named on the stein is Gebhard Schmid, 1902-1904 (dates of service?).
If my research is correct, Gebhard Schmid's father was
    Magnus Anton Schmid
(born Sept. 02, 1844, Lechaschau, Tirol, Austria; died June 30, 1924, Wangen-Allgau, Bavaria, Germany).
    Gebhard Schmid
was born Dec. 24, 1882 in Germany; he died Oct. 01, 1945.  His wife was Agathe (Steib) Schmid.  Their children included
    Josef Schmid
    (born 1901, died 1956).
The above information seems to coincide with the following, which was obtained from the Holocaust Museum:
    Joseph "Beppo" Schmid
(24 September 1901 – 30 August 1956) was a German general who served in the  Luftwaffe during World War II.
Schmid commanded the Luftwaffe's Military Intelligence Branch during the Battle of Britain.
A close friend of Hermann Goering,
Schmid commanded the Luftwaffe's Military Intelligence Branch (
    Abteilung 5
as Chief IC) from 1 January 1938 to 9 November 1942.
    DESCRIPTION:
Measures 9 1/2" from base to tip of prism, top diameter is 3", base diameter is 4 1/2", the bottom of the stein is recessed about 1 1/8" up from the base.
Maker's mark J. Schindele at top.
There is a black area on the bottom which may be remnants of a mark or may be just a smudge; I did not attempt to remove it.  The inside of the stein has a
    raised symbol/flower
that spans the bottom but can't determine what it is.  Colors in the
    lithopane scene
are vivid and surrounded by German writing.
    Prism
is perfect with sharp edges and no chips or cracks.  The interior of the metal lid is lighter than the exterior.  The stein is in
    EXCELLENT+ CONDITION.
I am not a stein expert but happy to try to answer any questions you may have.
