    Description

Laminated 1916 Prescription for H.M.C. Modified Tablets (containing Morphine Sulphate) - Antique Pharmacy Ephemera
This original prescription was written by Dr. I.W. Irvin and filled by E.H. Dort on May 17, 1916 (5/17/16), for patient Helen Rains, all of Auburn, Nebraska.
Dr. Isaiah Whitsett "Doc" Irvin (1876 - 1969) was a member of the American Medical Association for 60 years!
The typewritten prescription is for H.M.C. Modified Tablets, with the handwritten notation #1. The prescription specifies the
    morphine sulphate
content in each HMC Modified tablet.
    H.M.C.
stands for hyoscin (scopolamine), morphine and cactin. H.M.C. tablets are famously associated with "
    Twilight Sleep,
    "
an amnesic state of insensitivity to pain
    without loss of consciousness
during surgery, most commonly to eliminate labor pains during childbirth.
Hyoscin, or scopolamine, is also known as "Devil's Breath."
This century-old prescription has been laminated to protect it from damage and deterioration.
