The outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 led to a significant expansion of Australia's armored force. From 1942 large numbers of American light and medium tanks were delivered to Australia, along with British Matilda IIs.
Universal Carrier tanks were issued to the armored regiments in 1941 and early 1942 for training purposes and to provide the Army with a minimal armored capability as an emergency measure until the arrival of tanks ordered from the United States. The 1st Armored Division's armored regiments subsequently began re-equipping with M3 Grant medium tanks and M3 Stuart light tanks in April and May 1942.
Photograph measures 7 x 9  inches and is in excellent condition with no bends, tears, or creases and is very sharp and has strong tones with good contrast and clarity.  Back has writing mentioned above.
