He describes his part in the Battle of Retimo (Rethymnon), but the bulk of the story focusses on his hardships as a prisoner of war and his escape from his POW camp. His escape from Crete by British submarine reveals the network which was established by Royal Navy Intelligence, the Greek Orthodox Church and the Cretan Resistance.
