ted Mammoth White Ox, "General Grant". Reverse side of photograph is the following information: "This famous animal was exhibited during the war for the benefit of the Sanitary Commission at their fairs in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago, and there was realized from his exhibition about 12000 dollars which was paid into the Treasury of that noble Association. He was once presented to the Ladies of the "Sanitary Fair" in Boston, realizing to that institution over 4000 dollars, which stands on record as president Lincoln's subscription to that noble work. This animal is now on exhibition for the last time, and is to be presented to General U.S Grant on the occasion of his inauguration as President of the United States, in Washington, March 4, 1869."
